Harvard Mine

(Also Known as "Blue Sky Mine")

1955

GPS:  46.634   82.763

I visited Harvard Mine back in 1983.  At that time, there was an open adit with train rails going into the side of the cliff.  Approximately 30' away was a miner's shack with leftover mining gear.  To see a recent (2009) photo of the mine adit, click on this link below (Elliot Lake Coureurs deBois Voyageur) and scroll down

History

A 290' adit was drilled by Harvard Uranium Mines in 1955-56 at the frenzy of the boom exploration days in Elliot Lake

Directions

There are 2 ways to get to this mine, both of which start at the Cobre Lake parking lot.

1.)  Take the left side of Cobre Lake, there's a hiking trail that goes 3 / 4's of the way around the lake.  You will end up on the south-east shore of Cobre lake where you will hook up with an old road.  Take this road for approximately 1 / 2 kilometre or so into the bush.  You can't miss the mine adit, it is on your left, directly off the trail.  The adit was wide open last time I was there.

OR

2.)  If you prefer a shortcut, be prepared for a more rugged venture.  Take the southwest side of the lake route where you will be crossing both Bi-Ore mine adits and a deep trench on the side of the hill.  There is some old drill steel and bits to look at along the way.  Continue until you get to the southeast side of the lake, then hookup with the old road.

Although, I didn't see any black bears along the way, a good friend of mine did while he toured the same trail.  I've heard that Black Bears are common in this area.  You may wish to bring a defence mechanism of your choice.
